PERU: Congress backs García
Congress approved President Alan García's five-year economic plan on 24 August. The plan has two aims: to make Peru attractive to foreign investors and to reduce poverty. The encouraging point for García was congress's sweeping endorsement of his economic strategy. His plan was supported by 75 congressmen and opposed by only 18; another 23 congressmen abstained.
